Last Minute Decisions

A made or missed free throw, a good shot or bad shot, and many other decisions in the closing minutes of a big game often determine the winning team. Below are the top 5 things to be sure that not only you know as a coach, but more importantly, your players know, feel comfortable doing, and will do in a pressure situation whether winning or losing.
 

♦♦♦♦ The Top 5 Game Closing Minutes Decisions ♦♦♦♦

1. Do your 5 players on the court make up your best offensive team to score?
  a. Who will take the winning shot? What play do you run?
b. Who will take the 3 point shot? What play do you run?
c. What 5 players make up your best ball handling team to take care of the ball?
d. Most have a delay game, do you have speed up game if you’re losing?
 
2. Do your 5 players on the court make up your best defensive team to get a stop?
  a. Who for your opponents do you not want to take the winning shot? Who will guard him?
b. What 5 players make up your best team to cause a turnover? How will you trap the ball?
c. How will you guard picks on the ball for the last possession?
d. REMIND everyone to rebound, most game winners come from shots off of offensive rebounds
 
3. Do your 5 players on the court make up your best free throw shooting team?
  a. Who do you want to get fouled that will make free throws?
b. Who for your opponents do you want to foul if you’re losing?
c. REMIND everyone to block out their men (especially the shooter) have guards ready for tip outs
 
4. Do you have out of bounds plays to inbound the ball to score and against pressure?
  a. For full court, ¾ court, ½ court, and underneath own basket?
b. If there is just a few seconds left, do you have special plays or are they the same plays?
 
5. Do your 5 players on the court know the score and time left?

  a. Do your players understand how many points make up a possession?
b. How do you defend and what shot do you take away in a 1 or 2 or 3 possession game?
c. What shots do you take to score in a 1 or 2 or 3 possession game?
d. Do you foul if you’re up 3 points? If so, when do you foul?
 
Closing Notes:
  Make sure to prepare for these game situations in practice multiple times
Understand you need more than just 5 players prepared for these situations
Take into account, that you may not have time outs left in the game
